Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Mark Levitan is your East Northport Chiropractor and has been serving the surrounding Long Island community for over 30 years. Below are answers to the questions we hear most often.

General Chiropractic Care

What is chiropractic care and how does it work? Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between your spine and your nervous system. When spinal bones (vertebrae) shift out of position — a condition called a vertebral subluxation — they irritate the surrounding nerves and interfere with the signals traveling between your brain and your body. Dr. Levitan performs gentle, targeted spinal adjustments to correct these subluxations, restore proper alignment, and allow your body to function and heal the way it was designed to.

What is a subluxation? A subluxation occurs when a spinal vertebra moves out of position and puts pressure on the nearby spinal nerves. Think of it like an electrical short circuit in your home’s wiring — the signal gets interrupted. Subluxations can develop from physical stress (poor posture, repetitive motion, injury), chemical stress (poor diet, toxins), or emotional stress. Left uncorrected, they can affect your overall health well beyond just back pain.

Is chiropractic care safe? Yes. Chiropractic care is one of the safest, most conservative forms of healthcare available. At Levitan Chiropractic we use gentle, non-invasive adjustments with no drugs and no surgery. Dr. Levitan has been practicing for over 30 years and tailors every treatment plan to the individual patient — whether that’s a young child, a pregnant woman, or a senior with arthritis.

Does chiropractic hurt? Most patients feel relief during and after their adjustment. Some people experience mild soreness the first day or two, similar to how you might feel after starting a new exercise — this is your body adapting to the correction. Dr. Levitan uses gentle techniques and always works within your comfort level.

How many visits will I need? Every patient is different. On your first visit Dr. Levitan will conduct a full consultation and examination and then create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific condition, health history, and goals. Most patients begin to feel improvement within the first few weeks of consistent care.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Levitan? No referral is needed. You can call us directly at 631-722-1722 or request an appointment online. We can typically schedule you within 24 hours of your first call.

Is chiropractic a cure for disease? Chiropractic is not a cure or treatment for any specific disease. It is a way of optimizing your nervous system so your body can function at its full capacity. Unlike conventional medicine, which focuses on treating disease after it occurs, we focus on restoring and maintaining your health to reduce the risk of pain and illness in the first place.

Conditions We Help With

Can a chiropractor help with back pain? Yes. Back pain is one of the most common reasons patients visit Levitan Chiropractic. Spinal misalignments create nerve interference that causes pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. By correcting the underlying subluxations rather than masking symptoms with medication, Dr. Levitan helps patients achieve lasting relief. Many of our patients report significant improvement within their first weeks of care.

Can chiropractic care help with sciatica? Yes. Sciatica — the sharp, radiating pain that travels from the lower back down through the leg — is often caused by nerve compression related to spinal misalignment. Chiropractic adjustments can relieve that compression, reduce inflammation, and restore proper nerve function. Several of our patients have experienced significant improvement in their sciatic pain after just a few weeks under Dr. Levitan’s care.

Can chiropractic help with migraines and headaches? Many of our patients come to us specifically for migraines, and the results have been remarkable. Tension in the neck and upper spine is a major contributing factor to migraines. By correcting spinal alignment and reducing neurological stress, chiropractic care can significantly reduce both the frequency and severity of migraines. We have patients who went from weekly migraines to rarely having them at all after consistent care with Dr. Levitan.

Can chiropractic help with neck pain? Absolutely. Neck pain — whether from poor posture, tech neck, a car accident, or chronic tension — responds very well to chiropractic care. Dr. Levitan identifies the specific vertebrae causing nerve irritation and applies precise, gentle adjustments to restore proper alignment and relieve pain.

What is tech neck and can chiropractic help? Tech neck is the strain placed on the cervical spine from looking down at phones, tablets, and computer screens for extended periods. Over time it causes significant postural stress, pain, and subluxations in the neck and upper back. Chiropractic adjustments combined with postural guidance can correct the damage and help prevent it from worsening.

Can chiropractic care help with posture? Yes. Posture correction is a core focus at Levitan Chiropractic. Poor posture is both a cause and a result of spinal misalignment. Through spinal and postural correction and stabilization, Dr. Levitan has helped many patients achieve dramatic posture improvements that also reduce pain and improve their overall sense of wellbeing.

Can chiropractic help with pinched nerves? Yes. A pinched nerve is often the direct result of a spinal subluxation compressing the nerve root. Chiropractic adjustments address the structural cause of the pinched nerve, relieving pressure and allowing the nerve to function properly again.

Can chiropractic improve sleep and energy levels? Many patients report significant improvements in sleep quality and energy levels under regular chiropractic care. When your nervous system is under less stress and your body is functioning more efficiently, sleep improves naturally. Some patients have even reported they no longer need their morning coffee after beginning care with Dr. Levitan.

Prenatal & Pediatric Care

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy? Yes. Dr. Levitan provides gentle, safe chiropractic care specifically adapted for pregnant women. Pregnancy places significant physical stress on the spine and pelvis. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can relieve back pain, improve pelvic alignment, and support a healthier, more comfortable pregnancy. Dr. Levitan has helped many pregnant patients manage pain and even assisted with optimal fetal positioning.

Can chiropractic help with baby positioning before birth? Yes. Dr. Levitan has experience with techniques to support optimal fetal positioning during pregnancy. Proper pelvic alignment creates the best environment for the baby to settle into the correct position for birth.

Is chiropractic safe for children? Yes. Chiropractic care is safe and beneficial for children of all ages, from infants through teenagers. The adjustments used for children are very gentle and specifically adapted for smaller, developing spines. Many parents are surprised to learn that the physical stress of birth itself can cause spinal subluxations in newborns.

What conditions in children can chiropractic help with? Research and decades of clinical observation have shown positive changes in children under chiropractic care for a range of conditions including hyperactivity, asthma, anxiety, fatigue, low mental stamina, and learning difficulties. Chiropractic is not a treatment or cure for these conditions, but when structural and neurological stress is removed, children are better able to express their full health potential.

At what age can children start chiropractic care? At Levitan Chiropractic we see patients of all ages. No one is too young or too old to benefit from a healthy spine and nervous system. Dr. Levitan adjusts his techniques to be appropriate for each patient’s age and size.
